The People Behind Our Wagyu
From the pasture to the roping arena, and through years of military service, Herschel Cox has a story shaped by family, friendships, and the satisfaction of seeing a job through.
Ranching has been part of Herschel’s life, in one form or another, for as long as he can remember. Today, as Ranch Manager at Sunday River Ranch, he brings that lifelong connection to the day-to-day care of our herd and the work that keeps our ranch moving forward.
Herschel began roping around age 16. He stepped away when he entered the military, but a later assignment to Fort Lewis, Washington, brought him back to the arena. Along the way, he had the opportunity to rope with accomplished competitors such as Mike Beers and Bucky Campbell. He looks back on those experiences with gratitude, considering himself blessed to have shared the arena with some of the best.
Herschel entered military service in 1975 and served with the 82nd Airborne Division. One of his memorable experiences was serving in the presidential honor guard at Jimmy Carter’s inauguration. His service took him to countries including Panama, Germany, Italy, France, and England, giving him experiences and memories that have stayed with him. Australia remains a place he hopes to visit someday.
Fort Lewis holds an especially meaningful place in Herschel’s story: it is where he met his wife. They have now been married for 46 years. Away from the ranch, he values time with family and friends. He also takes particular satisfaction in seeing the results of work others have entrusted him to do—a simple sentiment that speaks to how he approaches responsibility.
At Sunday River Ranch, we are proud to have Herschel as our Ranch Manager and to share a little of the life and experience of the man behind the daily work.
